The City of Tempe’s study on the logistics and economics of converting waste grease to energy, funded through the U.S. Department of Energy’s block grant program, provides the City with an opportunity to implement a new model for the management of restaurant fats, oils, and grease (FOG) that will not only secure FOG as fuel for future renewable energy generation, but will solve the core problems that limit the effectiveness of its current strategy to protect critical infrastructure from the deleterious effects of FOG. Ryan Riggs of HDR will present the findings of the feasibility study, including the recommended roadmap for future energy generation using FOG. David McNeil will describe the development of Tempe’s downtown area pilot program for implementation of a Vendor-Contract model for FOG management, the first step in the implementation of Tempe’s FOG to Energy program.
