12:00 to 1:00 PM WEBINAR Presentation

Microplastics in the Environment

presented by Cayla Cook, Carollo Engineers

Microplastics (MP), polymeric particles occurring between 1 nm and 5,000 µm, are now found in every environmental compartment: air, water, and soil. Ecological and human health impacts of microplastics are largely unknown despite the public’s exposure to a credit card equivalent each week and international occurrence of MPs in drinking water and wastewater effluent. MP contamination may pose considerable challenges for water and wastewater treatment plants due to infinitesimally smaller size fractions as degradation and fragmentation occurs, leading to increased disinfection by-products (DBPs), decreased biogas production, and environmental and agricultural implications of mass land-application via biosolids.

Cayla Cook, MS from Carollo Engineers, Inc. will provide an overview of the following:

  • Current and short-term local and national regulations for microplastics, plastics, and plastic-associated additives
  • Possible sources of airborne microplastics
  • Impacts and concerns for water and wastewater treatment processes
  • Recent and on-going research activities with Arizona Universities

Cayla Cook studies the impacts of micro-and nanoplastics across all water matrices. This includes investigating removal technologies, implementing monitoring initiatives, and building a database to advance understanding of contamination. Her experience includes process design, analysis, and operations for both water and wastewater treatment facilities as well as research in polymer science, assessment of biopolymer nanotechnology, analysis of microplastic quantification methods, and evaluation of environmental and human health impacts of plastic and plastic-associated additives. Cayla supports offices nationwide at Carollo Engineers, Inc, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from Mississippi State University and a Master of Science from Arizona State University.
