Navigating Regulatory Uncertainty: Arizona's Approach to PFAS

The regulatory landscape for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) continues to evolve, resulting in ongoing uncertainty at the federal level. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has taken a proactive approach to meeting this challenge by conducting statewide PFAS testing and leveraging available funding to prioritize assistance for public water systems. These initiatives have resulted in a better understanding of the extent and magnitude of PFAS impacts in Arizona, and positioned the state to effectively prepare for and respond to future changes in federal regulations. This presentation will discuss ADEQ's strategy for managing PFAS while highlighting how proactive data collection and analysis are enabling the state to navigate this period of federal regulatory uncertainty and protect public health. He would also discuss how different environmental programs in ADEQ are adapting to meet the new challenges.
