"Managed Aquifer Management in the Santa Cruz River" Presented by
John Kmiec, Interim Director, Tucson Water
|
Managed aquifer management is an important water resource tool in the Tucson Active Management Area. Many parts of the Santa Cruz River have been re-established as riparian corridors by the City of Tucson and other effluent holders within the region. John Kmiec will discuss the history and importance of several in-channel managed recharge projects that the City of Tucson is involved in, including the Santa Cruz River Heritage Project located in downtown Tucson.
John Kmiec is currently the interim Director of Tucson Water. Prior to re-joining Tucson Water in 2019, John was the Director of Water and Wastewater for the Town of Marana (2012-2019). From 1999-2012, John was a member of the Tucson Water team assisting in advancing programs such as Central Arizona Project (CAP) recharge and recovery, effluent recharge and recovery, potable and reclaimed water distribution, and backflow prevention programs.
John is on the board of directors for the National WateReuse Association. He is also a director on the AZ Water Association Board. He holds an appointed position on Governor Ducey’s Water Augmentation, Innovation, and Conservation Committee. John represented the City of Tucson on Governor Brewer’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Water Sustainability in 2010 and was the Chemical Committee Chairman for ADEQ’s Advisory Panel on Emerging Contaminants. John has a B.S. in Geological Sciences from Michigan State University, a Master of Public Administration from Troy University, and is a Certified Public Manager (Arizona State University).
