Presented by Ondrea Barber, Freeport-McMoRan Native American Affairs Group and Ryan Eberle, Air Quality Program Manager, Gila River Indian Community
The presentation will provide an overview of the range of Tribal Environmental Departments (in AZ) focusing on the Gila River Indian Community’s Department of Environmental Quality (GRIC DEQ). The presentation will also present strategies for effective collaborations with Tribes and Tribal Environmental Departments.
Ondrea has over 25 years of experience working with and for Federal, State and Tribal governments and the private sector to address environmental concerns and develop successful environmental programs. She also has experience in cultural resource protection, housing, economic development, renewable energy development, mineral resource extraction, remediation projects, and multi-jurisdictional planning and problem solving. Her work in various capacities give her a unique perspective and wide range of experiences related to the challenges of environmental protection, Tribal Nation building, and natural resource management. Ondrea joined Freeport-McMoRan in 2017 with a focus on Native American/Indigenous People Engagement and environmental projects. She is part of the company’s Native American Affairs Team which aims to build long-term, transparent and mutually beneficial relationships with key tribal partners.
After graduating from NAU with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering, Ryan Eberle worked as an engineering consultant for 15 years assisting both public and private sector clients with air quality permit processing, compliance assurance, ambient air monitoring, and special projects. In 2014, he accepted the role of Air Quality Program Manager for the Gila River Indian Community. As the Air Program Manager, he leads a small team that conducts regulatory ambient air monitoring and permitting and compliance/enforcement activities for stationary sources and construction activities. From October 2021 through December 2022, Ryan was the Acting Director of Gila River’s Department of Environmental Quality, which includes air, water, waste, pesticide, and wildlife regulatory programs.
