Lessons Learned from Advances in Visualization Techniques: 5-year Look Back for Inland Responses

In this presentation, we will describe and compare the lessons learned from spill planning and response using static unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or drone) photography for developing a recent Geographic Contingency Plan (GCP) for the Treasure Valley Portion of the Snake River near Boise, Idaho in 2018, to an Artificial intelligence (AI) platform that integrates real-time data collection from UAV and sensors to identify ideal containment boom placement, anchoring, and staging in a 2023 Exercise on the St Johns River.  We will present the high-level lessons learned about each technology advancement used in planning and spill response.  We will then discuss how these technologies have improved, including the development of visualization data capture and communication platforms that leverage AI to bring ALL data in faster (real time) and with more detail.  We identify the top three changes from 2018 forward, promising practices, as well as any concerns industries and responders should have.
