Understanding PFAS Physical and Chemical Properties Towards an Informed Remedial Approach
|
Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a broad category of contaminants that have drawn recent scrutiny for their human health impacts at low concentrations and their widespread occurrence in groundwater systems. Mitigating the impacts of PFAS contamination will depend on both providing robust and reliable characterization of PFAS fate and transport as well as tailored remedial approaches that reflect the concentrations and distributions of PFAS contaminants within the soil and groundwater. This presentation will provide a background on the physical and chemical characteristics of PFAS compounds and how these characteristics impact both fate and transport in soils and ground water as well as how these properties impact the removal and treatment processes.
Dr. Edgar is a professional specializing in physical-chemical and biological water treatment systems for industrial, municipal, and contaminated water sources. Dr. Edgar has experience with the design and construction of a range of water treatment systems including ion exchange, in-situ ozone sparging, activated carbon adsorption, soil vapor extraction, reverse osmosis, and both in-situ and ex-situ groundwater bioremediation. Dr. Edgar also has extensive process troubleshooting experience and has been providing technical support and project managerial services for the design, construction, and operation of soil, groundwater, and wastewater treatment systems in Arizona since October 2021.
Matthew Bigler is an expert in fate and transport of PFAS in unsaturated soils, including site assessment, development and implementation of numerical models, and assessment of remediation strategies. His research has centered on the intersection of chemical adsorption and unsaturated flow of PFAS in the vadose zone. He has implemented novel experimental designs using microcosms to improve the understanding of transport phenomena and refine models for unsaturated migration of PFAS in soils, with multiple publications on the subject. He has used his experience at multiple sites to help develop site characterizations, assess remediation strategies of PFAS from source zones.
