Mining in Arizona

This talk will explore the significant role of mining in Arizona's history and its ongoing impact today. Arizona, known for its "Five C's" (copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate), has long been a mining powerhouse, particularly for copper. The discussion will cover:

  • Arizona's mining legacy: From the Territorial period to the present, how mining has shaped the state’s economy and identity.
  • Current mining industry: An overview of the active mines in Arizona today, including the key minerals the state is known for, such as copper, gold, and silver.
  • Regulations and safety: How modern mining practices and regulations ensure the safety of workers and the protection of the environment.
  • Future of mining in Arizona: The challenges and opportunities facing the industry moving forward, including technological advances and sustainability efforts.

Paul D. Marsh is an Arizona native and proud United States Marine Corps veteran with over 30 years of experience in the mining and construction industry. Starting as a laborer and heavy equipment operator, Paul’s dedication and hard work have led him to key roles, including Safety Manager, Director of Safety, and Operations Manager.

As the 13th State Mine Inspector in Arizona's history and the only elected mine inspector in the United States, Paul was appointed by Governor Doug Ducey in November 2021. He won election for his first four-year term in 2022, setting the record for the most votes for a candidate in Arizona history. With over 15 years dedicated to mining and construction safety, Paul is a Certified MSHA Blue Card Instructor and a Certified Mine Safety Professional. His leadership has revitalized the State Mine Inspector’s Office, modernizing the agency while focusing on its key objectives.

In his role as director of the State Mine Inspector’s Office, Paul oversees four divisions, ensuring compliance with state mining codes, conducting regulatory inspections, and providing essential training to miners. He is also responsible for approving land reclamation plans and managing the abandoned mine program to enhance public safety.
