Introduction to the Green Building Initiative and Green Globes

The Green Building Initiative (GBI)’s Green Globes® certification drives innovation in sustainability,
prioritizes health and safety, and focuses on decarbonization through strategic material selection and energy efficiency. This third-party assessment system acts as a comprehensive design guide, helping architects, engineers, and developers elevate sustainability in new construction, major renovations, and tenant improvements. It also serves as a rigorous benchmarking tool for existing buildings and offers valuable guidance across a building’s life cycle, including in Health & Wellness and Resilience. Additionally, GBI’s Green Globes Journey to Net Zero program incorporates the Green Globes Net Zero Calculator, which applies carbon accounting principles to measure energy usage and CO2e reductions. GBI offers both Net Zero Energy and Net Zero Carbon programs, which can be pursued individually or alongside Green Globes certification.

This presentation will explore GBI’s tools, highlight successful certification projects in the desert
Southwest, and showcase how sustainable, healthy, and resilient buildings can drive long-term
economic and environmental benefits. The session will also review innovative design strategies and
low-carbon incentives that support new construction and renovation projects, ultimately contributing to collective climate goals.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand how Green Globes certification evaluates sustainability, health and wellness, and
resilience for individual buildings or entire portfolios.
  2. Learn the importance of decarbonizing the built environment and how commercial real estate
owners and operators can drive meaningful change.
  3. Explore case studies demonstrating the practical application, benefits, and strategies of Green
    Globes certification.
  4. Gain insight into the economic and environmental benefits of sustainable building design,
    construction, and operation.

As Senior Director of Client Services and Engagement, Kate supports GBI’s Client Services team to
ensure the delivery of exceptional project management and educational offerings. She works directly
with project teams evaluating sustainability objectives and pursuing Green Globes certification and
Guiding Principles Compliance verification, providing expert assistance and guidance.

Additionally, Kate works closely with the marketing and program teams to deliver thought  leadership webinars, timely updates of resources, and educational training to GBI’s community. She engages the GBI community and new clientele at conferences and as an experienced presenter on GBI’s GreenGlobes and Guiding Principles Compliance programs and acts as a support for the organization’s credentialed professionals, including Green Globes Professionals, Guiding Principles Compliance Professionals, and Green Globes Emerging Professionals.

Kate has over a decade of experience in project and customer relationship management. She
graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Arizona. She is passionate about sustainability,
enjoys backpacking and bike-packing, and resides in Tucson.
